I am not sure if this is an evolution of the term, or just that it has had multiple meanings along the way, but as of now, most usages I hear of "janky" arae much milder. "Janky", as well as the noun form jank, are used to refer to something that is unreliable, undependable, or jury-rigged, but not necessarily malicious or undesirable. For example: "You might have to wiggle that USB connector around, it is a bit janky". Also used in gaming to refer to unreliable controls or set-ups. "You can jump from there, but you have to get the momentum just right, because it is janky".
