Japanese demonstrative pronoun corresponding to certain uses of the word "
that" in
English. Unlike its
adjective counterpart
sono, which describes a following
noun,
sore is used by itself. It opposes
kore and
are, which convey the other aspects of relative distance.
Sore wa nan desu ka.

Sore is also part of several conjunctions, but all these have idiomatic meanings and are treated as completely separate words. See sorekara, soreni, sorenara, and soretomo for some examples.
