as the first pilots to fly across the
Atlantic. These men actually made the
first nonstop crossing. There was an earlier crossing, only less than one month before the historical first nonstop flight.
On May 27 1919, the pilots of an NC-4 U.S. Navy plane became the first persons to cross the
Atlantic by air. The plane crossed from Newfoundland to
Lisbon, with a stop in the Azores en route. This plane was manned by Lieutenant Commander Albert Read, Lieutenant James Breese, Ensign Herbert Rodd, Lieutenant Elmer Stone, Lieutenant Walter Hinton, and Chief Mechanics Eugene Rhoads.
