Hydroponics is a highly studied field and is used on the space shuttle. In Star Wars, Luke Skywalker's Uncle Owen was the owner of a hydroponic station. It took water from various sources on the planet and was a giant enclosed farm.
Also in EPCOT in Disney World, in Orlando, Florida on a special exhibit called The Land, they have major hydroponic operation going on. The food grown there is also sold there.
