In many cultures the egg is regarded as a
symbol of
renewal. In mythology,
Leda's two sets of
twins,
Castor and
Clytemnestra and
Helen and
Pollux, were born from eggs because
Jupiter
had fathered them in the shape of a
swan.
In 16th-century Netherlandish art an egg with two legs and a knife sticking out of the top is thought to represent a type of demon.
