Late-Night Roses
Late-night roses haven't been told to close
with
the passing of the sun.
Strange how they
smell:
rich, and soaked
in
promise.
Have you ever tasted a
rose,
tasted a late-night rose?
Those
flushed petals so vibrant
transform on the tongue to softest
nothing.
Do late-night roses know
why and how they pull
passersby in for a snort,
then leave
addicts to mill like grounded bees?
Cocaine takes the septum, but
these nocturnal blooms beckon across
the distance between species.
Aren't these
conquests planned
deep inside
rosebush roots,
then
in crawling need invoked?
What is a late-night rose alone but
another prolonged blossom?
