sub-culture within the larger African-American culture. Gullah people predominantly lived on the
islands off the coast of the Carolinas. Many of the inhabitants of these islands escaped from slavery during the
African Holocaust and maintained their
African heritage and tradition. In fact, many African words have survived to this day in their "
dialect".
