Metaphorically, your bread and butter is your primary source of income -- that is, it's where you get the money to buy bread and butter and other necessities.

This phrase sometimes implies that the money source is not one's favorite, but simply the steadiest or largest. An artist might say, for example, that portraits are her bread and butter but abstract sculpture is what really excites her.
