First American submarine to sink due to a major collision with another sub.

On December 16, 1917, the F-1 was conducting surface maneuvers off the California coast during an exercise with the F-3, its sister ship. The F-3 accidentally rammed the F-1 just forward of the engine room on her port side. The F-1, not equipped to survive a severe blow to such a critical area, sank in about 10 seconds, killing 19 of her crew of 22.
