A chestnut horse has a solid body color falling in the copper, red, or red-brown families. There are no darker "points" like in the bay.
Mane and tail are the same, or a shade or two off, the body color. The one exception is the sorrel variation--a clear red body in which the main and tail can be flaxen, like those of a palomino.
