Web Usability (idea)

designing a usable website does not mean that you have to leave out all the fun stuff, like Flash, DHTML or similar. The (careful) use of new technologies can indeed make your site more usable, eg. when using Flash to replace raster graphics, when appropriate (of course, you'd still want to provide the image in a way accessible to all). As with all design skills, you should know the rules and then carefully break them.

A usable site IMHO adresses the following issues:

• Ease Of Use - is your navigation referring to established metaphors? How long does a new user need to find his way around?
• Orientation - is it always clear where the current page is located on your site, how to get here later and where to get from here?
• Efficiency - how fast does an average user get to the information he was looking for? Why does it take so long? Do you have huge, useless images on your site?
• Accessibility - is your website accessible to users with non-standard browsers, to blind folks and lynx geeks?
• Clearness, Perspicuity - is your layout cluttered with animations, banners and colors, or is it clear, well-designed, and adressing basic rules of typography?
• Consistency - are you using the same methods for navigation all around your site? Does the user recognize any single one of your pages to belong to the same site?
