Max Karl Ernst Ludwig Planck, 1858-1947,
German theoretical physicist, born in
Kiel. Became professor of theoretical physics in
Berlin. Worked on the
law of thermodynamics and
black body radiation and was one of the first to
abandon classical Newtonian principles and introduced the
quantum theory in
1900. He was awarded the
Nobel Prize in
Physics for this in
1918.
