A 16-voice digital polyphonic synthesizer, Roland's answer to the Yamaha DX7. Released in 1987, it was the first synth to feature Linear Arithmetic Synthesis.
The D-50 is not among the most popular vintage synths, but it still has a substantial fan base.

Although the L/A synthesis is often dismissed as mere hype, according to many people it has made D-50 the warmest digital synth in existence. The pad and string sounds are especially praised. The overall sound of the machine is very unique, which is an another reason for people loving it.

Programming the D-50 is very confusing, complicated and even cryptic at times. However, it can also be a rewarding experience because of the vast possibilities it offers. To ease this process, the PG-1000 module was released.
