The traditional rank of hereditary peers goes (from highest to lowest):

• Duke
• Marquess: the English spelling of the French marquis.
• Earl: the wife or female equivalent of an Earl is "Countess", not "Earless".
• Viscount
• Baron

A common mnemonic to remember this is: "Do men ever visit Boston?".
