Late summer afternoon shadows
moved across the backyard
As she listened to the answering machine message
for the sixth time

There was now clearly
some element of doubt
though she reminded herself that
not all worries are legitimate

Nagging questions lingered:
what signs had she missed,
what clues had she ignored- and
how long had she been clueless?

Doubt, once it moves in makes itself comfortable,
while its host becomes miserable.

Hours later, When he arrived home,
he asked why she was sitting in the dark.
She thought about the irony and
almost laughed.
