Vedic Society was divided into four castes or varnas:
brahmins (or, more properly, brahmanas), kshatriyas, vaishyas, and shudras. The
brahmin was said to belong to the highest caste since he is said to study
the Vedas and philosophy. He was supposed to transcend material
aspirations.
