Any of a diverse group of
drugs used to relieve pain. Analgesic drugs include the
nonnarcotics such as the salicylates, the narcotic drugs such as
morphine, and
synthetic drugs with morphinelike action (see
narcotic).

salicylates reduce
fever and
inflammation as well as relieve
pain. Salicylate substitutes such as
phenacetin or
acetaminophen (
Tylenol) are often given to individuals sensitive or
allergic to salicylates.
