the new model for paying artists (idea)

The old model is broken. The MP3 revolution has shown us this. When broadband really gets a foothold, everyone, not just college students and us who are lucky enough to be able to get DSL, will trade digital copies of art. So what's the solution?

Solutions I've heard put forward:

• Do we lock art down? Make it impossible (chuckle) to copy and share?
• Do we not do anything, and allow the free trade of art to happen unfettered?

The problems with any solution:

• Any encryption scheme can be broken, given enough time. See the cracking, and subsequent distribution to the encryption on DVDs (deCSS)
• Artists must be able to be paid for their work. Anyone who makes good work must be able to be compensated for that work; those who are good at their work should be able to devote more time to it (e.g., not have to get a day job).
• Ideas are not conventional property. This is why rules like fair use were written into laws about copyright. We must be able to share ideas, be influenced by ideas, and reuse ideas.

So what's the solution? You are all bright people....Discuss. Don't rant. Don't post stuff like "Metallica sux0rs." Discuss.
