1908 - 1967, Brazilian writer from the XX century, better known for his wild relationship with the Portuguese language. Sometimes called
"the Brazillian James Joyce", he would not let language constraints stop him in his unstopable quest for a new storytelling. Often creating new words that could resemble popular talk, while being able to be used in the most erudite speeches.
Born in the state of Minas Gerais, it was in the backlands of this same state that most of his narrations took place. A sparsely populated region not at all unlike the far west made so popular in early Hollywood movies.
While almost all his writing consists of short histories, there is under his pen one full novel called Grande Sertão: Veredas (translated as Big Backlands: Pathways, The Devil to Pay in the Backlands), a fantastic book.
