Tasman was the name of the engine for
Microsoft's
Macintosh Internet Explorer. It was based on the same object model as
IE for
Windows, but had an entirely different implementation. It's comptetitor,
Netscape, used the exact same engine for all versions (leading to shard bugs and mostly shared quirks within them all). This leads to quite a
headache for web
developers, as they have to run their site and code through the
Macintosh version of this popular
browser as well as mainstream
Windows testing.
Currently, the tasman engine powers
IE 5.5, the flagship browser for
Mac OS X.
