I first went to see this movie in San Francisco at The Red Vic Movie house, which described it as "If Kubrik's 2001 was directed by David Lynch & Jim Jarmusch, you might get something like The American Astronaut." I'm not sure if even that can adequately describe it. It's almost as if someone combined cheesy science fiction with an old western, threw in some mind warping plot and setting twists, then made it a musical.
Any description of the plot would be futile, and it would only at best confuse you, or at worst spoil the movie. So, I will tell you, it was written, directed, and starred in by Cory McAbee, co-founder of The Billy Nayer Show, which contributed all of the music. Also starring are Rocco Sisto as the mad scientist, Greg Russell Cook as "The Boy", and Tom Aldredge as a pretty funny old man.
The soundtrack goes as follows:
- The American Astronaut
- Shaving
- Ceres Walk
- Henchmen
- Hey Boy
- Love Smiles
- Death of A Pirate
- Sandman
- Ship Alarm
- Jupiter Arena
- A
