Cold Comfort Farm(1996), PG
directed by John Schlesinger, starring Kate Beckinsale, Eileen Atkins, with minor roles by Stephen Fry and Sir Ian McKellen

A British film based on the 1932 novel by Stella Gibbons. The heroine (Beckinsale) is a young woman, Flora ("Robert Poste's child") who is forced to take advantage of obscure relatives upon the death of her parents.

Flora decides to go to the gloomy Starkadder farm and fix up the lives of her loopy relatives. Not only does she get free room and board, but she plans on gaining experience for the novel she's going to write when she is fifty-something.

This movie is hilarious in every weird sort of way. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys the ridiculous.
