In classical Roman times, a term used to describe an estate manager, placed in charge of the day-to-day management of a villa which was not the permanent residence of its owner. A vilicus was often a trusted slave, sometimes a manumitted freedman.
By extension, the term vilicus was also used to describe trusted slaves in non-agricultural circumstances, such as overseers.
