Gay is a small town in northern Michigan on the eastern shore of the Keweenaw Peninsula, population 43. Once the site of a stamp mill for a nearby copper mine, Gay is largly a ghost town today, primarly consisting of abandoned buildings and decaying roads. The ruins of the old mill still remain, and its 265-foot smokestack serves as a landmark for local boaters.
The town's name has nothing to do with homosexuality, having been named after one of its founders, one Joseph E. Gay, but the town's less-than-politically-correct inhabitants have taken advantage of recent shifts in the usage of the word "gay," renaming the town's drinking establishment to "Gay Bar" and selling T-Shirts and other memorabilia prominently featuring the town's name in ambiguous contexts.
