A subdiscipline of
linguistics and
cognitive science, cognitive linguistics is the study of
language in terms of its basically
cognitive nature.
A major finding of cognitive linguists is that our ability to reason abstractly and talk about it are outgrowths of such natural capacities as perception and locomotion. Current findings suggest our ability to reason abstractly is actually embodied in the same neural structures that we use for these basic capacities.
