Vicki Sue Robinson recorded the
1976 hit ``
Turn
The Beat Around,'' which was was widely considered the
disco anthem of that
dancing decade.
Robinson's influences ranged from
the blues of
Dinah Washington to the
folk stylings of
Pete Seeger. She made her singing debut at age 6 with her mother at the
Philadelphia Folk Festival.
As a teen-ager, she appeared on
Broadway in ``
Hair'' and ``
Jesus Christ Superstar.''
When she hit the recording studio, she struck gold with ``Turn The Beat Around,'' one of the biggest hits of
the disco era. She was nominated for a
Grammy Award for
best female vocalist and earned a
Billboard Award for the
No. 1 pop album.
Robinson recently joined in a
disco revival, touring with
K.C. and the Sunshine Band,
The Village People and
Gloria Gaynor.
