A
freeway entrance, also known (at least in the US) as an
onramp, is the road that provides a transition from
surface street to
superhighway. Freeway entrances tend to be one-lane,
one-way roads, and often take a circular, gently
banked path as they deposit vehicles into a whizzing blur of traffic.
In front of the entrance to Highway 29 eastbound from Calhoun Street in Trenton, NJ, there is a sign, which reads:
FREEWAY ENTRANCE
NO
PEDESTRIANS
BICYCLES
HORSES
You just have to wonder about the precedents which forced that last item to be added to the list, back in the 50's and 60's when these highways were constructed... New Jersey isn't that close to the Amish communities of southern Pennsylvania...
