Scientific name: Ectopistes migratorius

Passenger pigeons were once abundant throughout North America. They migrated in huge flocks, and ate mainly nuts. They only laid one egg per year, in small nests.

Over-hunting caused the extinction of the passenger pigeon. They were hunted largely for their meat. The last passenger pigeon died in captivity in 1914.
