Genesis 2:7 "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
The Hebrew word translated as soul is nephesh, meaning a breathing creature, or perhaps by extension life.
If it's alive, then it has (is) a "soul." If it's human then it has (is) a human "soul."
