Like all things Unix, compression utilities exist in several generations, and the old ones won't go away even when the new ones have been widely accepted.
- first we had compress
- then, freeze
- gzip arrived
- bzip2 is the in thing now
Who knows what we'll be using
tomorrow.

zip (i.e. the
pkzip compatible zip) with Solaris now.
