School of Japanese
Buddhism founded by
Saicho, Dengyo daishi in the 800s. Very loosely based on the Chinese Tiantai school of Zhihyi. Using the
Lotus sutra for inspiration, it presents an integrated yet
syncretic approach to
Dharma.
Techniques range from
Mikkyo to
Pure Land to
samatha and
vipashyana.
Historically, all of the major movements in Japanese Buddhism that flourished in the Kamakura era originated with Teachers who were originally Tendai monks. For example, Dogen zenji, Honen, Shinran and so on all originally trained on Hiei-san.
