Basil Wolverton (1909-1978) was a cartoonist most famous for drawing grotesque caricatures.
The first such picture he produced in response to a magazine contest held in 1946. The contest was to imagine what Lena the Hyena, a character in the comic strip Li'l Abner looked like. She was meant to be the world's ugliest woman and the artist Al Capp never depicted her in the strip. He won the contest and the picture was published on the cover of the magazine Life.
He later went on to produce many more such caricatures for the magazines Mad and Plop!.
As well as these, he also drew more mainstream comic strips such as Powerhouse Pepper and Spacehawk.
