The Latins attempt to consolidate their hold over the empire they created in the ruins of the Byzantine Empire. But when they attempt to beseige Adrianople, they find that Bulgarian Tsar Kaloyan already holds it. The Bulgarian forces (aided by Cuman (Kipchak, Polovtsy) reinforcements) decimate the Latin army; Baldwin I is taken prisoner.
