Prussian king Frederick II's little jaunt in Silesia
triggers the War of the Austrian Succession:
Meanwhile, Spain and Great Britain continue the War of Jenkins'
(March 4-April 16) British regulars and Colonial troops arrive at Cartagena
in what is now Colombia.
General Wentworth bungles the campaign badly. Hundreds of colonials
die from Spanish cannon, but yellow fever and starvation kill one-third
of the troops.
George Washington's brother Lawrence serves under
Admiral Edward Vernon during this debacle. When he comes
home, he names the family estate Mount Vernon.

Several fires break out in New Amsterdam. Fearing a slave revolt, the
Dutch government rounds up some people (mostly black slaves), hangs some,
and burns others at the stake.
