• Rebellious Corsicans take control of the island away from their Genoese rulers. They form a Republic under Pasquale Paoli.
• An earthquake and subsequent tsunami devastates Lisbon and the rest of Portugal. Speculated to be magnitude 9.0.
• An earthquake strikes Boston, Massachussetts.  Speculated to be magnitude 6.5.
• The French and Indian War gets nasty.
