Ανθευς
A young native of Halicarnassus, of royal stock, who lived as a hostage at the court of Phobius, the tyrant of Miletus. The wife of Phobius, Cleoboea (called by other writers Philaechme) fell in love with him, but the young man would not yield to her. In the end Cleoboea determined to take her revenge by destroying him. She threw a golden cup into a deep well and bade Antheus go down and look for it, then, when he was at the bottom, she threw an enormous stone on him which crushed him. In remorse at the murder she had committed she hanged herself (see also Phrygius).
