An alternate meaning of the name Anthony is "Beyond Praise." It probably originally comes from Psalm 96: "For the Lord is great and greatly to be praised: he is to be feared above all gods." (Psalm 96:4) The psalm is also part of an ancient Christian song called the Cantate Domino, a song that means, "Sing to the Lord a New Song" when translated into English. It is in the form of a Gregorian chant, but may predate even that musical form

Anthony has been the name of several saints. The most recognizable is Saint Anthony of Padua, the patron saint of finding lost objects. Another Saint Anthony was an Egyptian desert mystic who is considered to be the father of Christian monasticism.

A St. Anthony has also been attributed to writing a famous prayer still used today: "Behold the Cross of the Lord, flee ye hostile powers of darkness. The lion of the tribe of Judah, the root of David, has conquered."
