The Baltimore chop is an hitting stratagem in baseball in which a batter bats the ball sharply downward into the dirt in front of home plate such that it bounces high into the air, hopefully allowing a the batter to reach first base before the ball can be fielded. The Baltimore chop was first pioneered by speedy Baltimore Orioles third baseman John McGraw in the 1890s.
