A
Benedictine monastery in
northwestern Missouri. Theirs is a rather
distinguished history, notably in the
area of
liturgy: prior to and during the
Second Vatican Council,
experiments in liturgy were
conducted there.
In the
fall of
1996,
Abbot Marcel Rooney, OSB, the
seventh abbot of Conception Abbey, was
elected to the
office of
Abbot Primate, the
head of the
worldwide Benedictine Confederacy.
In the
spring of
1999,
major renovation to the
basilica church was completed, and the
new altar was
consecrated. A
highlight of the renovation work was the
cleaning and
restoration of the
Beuronese murals,
originally painted by
monks themselves.
Conception Abbey has
three primary apostolates:
Conception Seminary College, the
Conception Printery House, and the
Abbey Center For Prayer and Ministry.
