An ethnographic book by Maya Deren, written in 1953. She had originally intended to make an ethnographic film, but found that the medium was not sufficient to express her findings. This is interesting because many ethnographers turn to film when they find that the written word is inarticulate in communicating experience and lived culture.
The footage that she shot in Haiti was compiled and edited by Teiji and Cherel Ito to make a film of the same name in 1977.
