The ESS, or Electronic Switching System meant the end of the majority of fun in telephone phreaking. ESS tracks everything you do, every digit dialed, every call you make, and so on. In the old days before ESS, dial tones, ring tones, and busy signals sounded different depending on where you were and who you were calling. These days, thanks to ESS, they all sound the same.
