Farm Sanctuary is an organization with over 75,000 members nationwide, that was founded in 1986 by Lorri Bauston and Gene Bauston. Originally founded to investigate and document animal abuse at factory farms, stockyards, and slaughterhouses, by 1990 the organization had raised enough money to purchase a 175-acre farm in Watkins Glen, NY in order to provide care and shelter for abandoned, neglected, and mistreated farm animals. In 1994, Farm Sanctuary opened an additional 300-acre facility in California.

In addition to caring for individual animals, the organization works for enactment of legislation to reduce animal cruelty in the food industry. For example, in 1995 Farm Sanctuary was instrumental in the passage of a California state law banning abuse of so-called "downed" animals (animals that are too sick or weak to be legally slaughtered for food production). This led to the conviction of a California stockyard for animal cruelty and the imposition of the largest fine ever for such an offense.
