Horticulture is by definition the non-agricultural use of a plant in a landscape i.e. landscape architecture. Hort deals with the planting and caring for trees and other plants in a landscape. To some it might be boring (although personally i'd take working with plants over coding a 342243 line program any day.. thats just me) but even more boring is a whole city with no plants at all in it. Horticulture stretches over a wide range of topics from personal gardens to golf course design to habitat restoration. Unfortunately, most people who design landscapes and maintain them have little or no horticultural knowledge which often results in trees falling on people, dead plants, sick plants, water wasted on inappropriate plants, plants dropping nasty fruit on things, etc, etc.

Hor"ti*cul`ture (?), n. [L. hortus garden + cultura culture: cf. F. horticulture. See Yard an inclosure, and Culture.]
