Temporary name of CTY, the Center for Talented Youth program. For no readily apparent reason, they decided a few years ago to restyle themselves IAAY, pronounced as a bloodcurdling "EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAIGH!!!!". Or so we claimed at the time; it was CTY, damnit, not this alphabet soup. At first, the acronym stood for something like "Institute for the Advancement of Academically Talented Youth."
(Yes, really. No, I don't know where the T went.)
Then they changed the name to "Institute for the Academic Advancement of Youth," which at least corresponded to the acronym. According to their website, they renamed themselves "CTY" as of January 1, 2000. Still a heavenly place, I hope, no matter what its name.
Also called "Institute for the Advancement of Asians and Yids," in a play on the typical ethnic makeup of gifted & talented programs. (N.B.: "Yids" is usually a pejorative term for Jews, but since a Jewish friend told me about this phrase with much glee, I don't
particularly mind using it here).
