Perhaps this phrase is quintessentially English. Many English people (in the south at least), have a mythology of the North, and imagine its Towns such as Bolton, Preston, Sunderland etc. to be backward, cold, unfriendly, drunken, violent - to put it in a nutshell GRIM.
