LACNIC is the Latin American and the Caribbean IP Address Regional Registry.  It is an emerging organization and it is closely linked to ARIN for the moment.  Among it's main functions is the assignement of IPv4 and IPv6 space as well as Autonomous Systems Numbers (ASN) accodring to RFC2050.

All IP and ASN requests for the area used to be handled direclty by ARIN, now all requests are forwarded to LACNIC and are jointly considered for efficient use of the quickly diminishing IPv4 space.  By November 18 2002 it is expected that LACNIC will become an autonomous entity.

Just like other registry entities (ARIN, RIPE, AP NIC, AFRINIC) it depends directly from ICANN.

According to the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA), the IP space 200.0.0.0/8 is allocated to Latin America.
