An acronym that means Most Valuable Player.
Typically used as a method to award the individual who contributed above and beyond the typical efforts by the rest of the team, it is sometimes given to the luckiest player that took advantage of another player's stumble and was able to run the football to the end zone as the clock expired, winning the Superbowl. Other times, it is given to a player that is immensely popular, so it can be used as a marketing gimmick.
Some events have their own MVP award, such as the World Series Most Valuable Player or the Superbowl MVP. Some leagues have an overall MVP award at the end of the season. I've even seen this kind of award given out for bowling leagues. It's a nice award for those who go out of their way to help others on their team and have a team-first mentality.
