Montgomery County, Maryland

Montgomery County, Maryland, lies on the northwest side of the District of Columbia. The word suburb was coined to denote the housing developments that sprawled alongside 270 in Montgomery County during the great economic expansion following World War II. The towns of Chevy Chase, Bethesda and Rockville are located in Montgomery County.

Montgomery County has claimed

the greatest number of PhDs of any county in the United States per capita; and
to have been the site of the very first strip mall (along the Rockville Pike); and
the high school of newscaster Connie Chung.

Directions: from downtown DC, drive north on Connecticut Avenue through Dupont Circle, Adams Morgan, past the Tilden Tunnel, American University, and Briggs Circle, then voila, you've in Montgomery County.
