Byzantine general (c478-c573AD) who was involved in the suppression of the Nika riot (532). In 538, Justinian I sent him to assist Belisarius in the reconquest of Italy from the Ostrogoths. However the two generals were unable to work together amicably. In 548 Belisarius was recalled, and Narses was sent to deal with the Ostrogoth king Totila. He finally brought him to ground at Taginae, near modern-day Ancona, where Totila was slain. Following his victories, Narses was made Prefect of Italy. However he was later removed from this office by the emperor Justin II.
