In pop or rock music, a pad is a sustained sound usually created by a synthesizer. It is often used as a backing behind vocals or solo instruments, and tends to give a warm, mellow character to the music. Pads are often based on the sounds of strings, but brass, electronic pianos or purely electronic sounds might also be used.
